The world knows this unforgettable melody and sings it in numerous languages. “Shchedryk” (Carol of the Bells), inspired by a Ukrainian folk carol, became a global symbol of Christmas.
It was composed by Ukrainian Mykola Leontovych, born on this day in 1877. Leontovych was a teacher, composer, and choir conductor who dedicated his life to recording and revitalising Ukrainian folk songs.
His music carries a special kind of magic: no matter the language, the melody resonates with joy, hope, and the spirit of celebration.
Leontovych was tragically killed in 1921 by Soviet secret police for defending Ukrainian culture. But his legacy lives on, and “Shchedryk” continues to unite people around the world.
11-year-old Roman Oleksiv, who survived the Russian missile attack on Vinnytsia, spoke at the European Parliament during a documentary screening about Ukrainian children. He shared the story of losing his mother in the attack. The boy survived severe burns through 36 surgeries and long rehabilitation.
His story moved the translator to tears as she interpreted his words for the audience. Despite everything, Roman continues to study, dance, and make music, inspiring others with his message: “Never give up. Together, we are strong.”
Deputy Foreign Minister of Ukraine Mariana Betsa delivered a speech at the UN General Assembly debate, presenting the draft resolution “Return of Ukrainian Children,” initiated by Ukraine together with 46 co-sponsors. The resolution was adopted with the support of 91 UN member states.
“There will be no just peace in Ukraine without the unconditional return of Ukrainian children. This resolution is not about politics. It is about humanity. Ukrainian children are non-negotiable”, Mariana Betsa stressed.
Ukraine will continue working with the international community to ensure this resolution brings tangible results and real protection for children’s rights.

У четвер, 27 листопада, міністр закордонних справ України Андрій Сибіга провів у Києві двосторонні переговори з міністеркою закордонних справ Латвії Байбою Браже, яка здійснила свій четвертий візит до України від часу вступу на посаду.
Андрій Сибіга поінформував латвійську колегу про американські пропозиції щодо досягнення миру, які Україна отримала минулого тижня, а також про поточну роботу української та американської переговорних команд. Міністр наголосив на важливій ролі Європи у мирних зусиллях.
«Україна використовуватиме кожну можливість для пошуку шляхів припинення війни. Ми скоординували подальші кроки, і я вдячний Байбі за її поради та принципову позицію», — заявив глава МЗС.
Сторони приділили окрему увагу посиленню тиску на Москву з метою примусу держави-агресора до миру. Міністр наголосив на необхідності якнайшвидшого ухвалення сильного 20-го пакета санкцій ЄС та рішень щодо репараційного кредиту задля повного використання знерухомлених російських активів.
За підсумками переговорів сторони домовилися разом з іншими країнами Балтії просувати на рівні ЄС додаткові дієві заходи для подальшої протидії танкерному флоту Росії.
«Балтійське море не має сприяти кривавим нафтовим заробіткам Росії, які ще й створюють ризики для екології», — наголосив глава українського дипломатичного відомства.
Міністри також обговорили оборонні пріоритети на наступний рік, зокрема розширення співпраці між Україною та Латвією у сфері спільного виробництва й обміну технологіями.
“Цінуємо допомогу Латвії у підготовці українських військових та її турботу про поранених захисників. Дякуємо за лідерство у “Коаліції дронів”, у межах якої Латвія передала цьогоріч 12 тисяч дронів. Обговорили збільшення темпів виробництва та постачань на 2026 рік”, – заявив Андрій Сибіга.
Окремо очільники дипломатичних відомств зосередилися на підтримці енергетичної системи України напередодні зими. Українська сторона вдячна за додатковий внесок Латвії у розмірі 125 тисяч євро, який сприятиме відновленню об’єктів енергетики, безперебійному електропостачанню та стабілізації енергосистеми.
Міністр висловив глибоку вдячність Латвії за всебічну підтримку України від перших днів повномасштабного вторгнення, зокрема щорічну оборонну допомогу в обсязі 0,25% ВВП Латвії. Загалом її обсяг уже перевищив 1,6% латвійського ВВП.
«Йдеться про зброю, боєприпаси, підготовку військовослужбовців, фінансову підтримку. Вдячні Латвії також за приєднання до PURL і за нещодавню передачу 42 бронетранспортерів “PATRIA 6×6”», — додав глава МЗС.
Міністр особливо подякував Латвії за відбудову критичної та цивільної інфраструктури Чернігівщини, відпочинок у Латвії для дітей з українського регіону. Співрозмовники обговорили втілення цьогорічних проєктів у Чернігівській області, загальна сума яких складає 5,7 млн євро, а також перспективи і пріоритети на наступний рік.
«Учора ви відкрили в Чернігові два об’єкти, відбудовані за кошти Латвії: педіатричний корпус Чернігівської центральної районної лікарні та Центр захисту прав людини. Ми надзвичайно цінуємо ці зусилля», — зазначив Андрій Сибіга.
Глава МЗС окремо відзначив важливість обрання Латвії як непостійного члена Ради Безпеки ООН. За його словами, це відкриє нові можливості для просування ініціатив на підтримку України. Дипломати обговорили поглиблення співпраці в ООН та інших міжнародних організаціях.
Важливою частиною візиту стала презентація архівних дипломатичних документів доби УНР та Української Держави, які були представлені латвійській делегації в МЗС України. Серед них — дипломатичні документи віцеконсулів та консульських агентів Української Держави у Ризі, які люб’язно надала Державна архівна служба України.
